Creator and Creature
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (October, 1988)
Authors: Frederick W. Faber and Sydenham Hill
Average review score:

Review from the Publisher
Fr. Faber's key book, which stands at the "source and origin" of all his others, for it contains the fundamental insight which leads to a proper understanding about all other aspects of our religion. Says men in the modern era accept God's existence, but deny His sovereignty in practice, and he explores the ramifications of this. Though composed in mid-19th century, this book is absolutely on target today, for man's tendency to arrogate to himself the prerogatives of God - strong in Fr. Faber's time - is epidemic today and cannot but influence Catholics. This book is a powerful awakener!

The Cross and the Shroud: A Medical Inquiry into the Crucifixion
Published in Paperback by Paragon House (September, 1988)
Author: Frederick T. Zugibe
Average review score:

Fascinating Science and Valuable Material for Meditation
I read this book because I was interested in finding out the physiological cause of Christ's death. Dr. Zugibe gives a very viable explanation but in addition gives a sensitive and vivid account of the last events of Christ's life. I found it profoundly moving to realize the breadth and profundity of Christ's suffering. Suffering which he entered into willingly! At one point the author (speaking as a forensic pathologist) notes, (given the tremendous blood loss, exhaustion, pain from the crown of thorns, etc.) that Jesus' surviving to be nailed to a cross was "an act of sheer will power." This is the loving Lord of all, who would will himself to suffer for the sins of the world. The material on the Shroud was also intriguing and the illustrations work well to support Zugibe's entire thesis.

Cross He Bore

Author: Frederick S. Leahy

Heart-warming meditations on the Passion
Leahy's book provides several short, easy-to-read but profoundly searching meditations on the Passion of Christ. These are readings to chew on, not rush through. I have found it a useful preparative to partaking of the Lord's Supper.

Dear Father: Letters to Frederick Douglass from His Children
Published in Paperback by Fulmore Pr (June, 1990)
Author: Mark A. Cooper
Average review score:

The personal side of Douglass via letters from his papers
I found myself captivated like a voyeur peering into the lives of Frederick Douglass and his children. They contained moments of joy, triumph, and tragedy, sorrow. The letters start with his daughters letter when he is on the run because of John Brown's failed revolt at Harpers Ferry. The letters from the youngest son Charles take us to the inner workings of the Freedman's Bureau and later the Treasury Department. His letters to his father give detailed description of the developing black community in Washington DC after Reconstruction. The final letter to Douglass comes from his daughter only weeks before his death in 1895. You can't help but feel you know this great american a little better once you have followed his life in these letters from his children

Death and Eastern Thought: Understanding Death in Eastern Religions and Philosophies.
Published in Hardcover by Abingdon Press (November, 1974)
Author: Frederick H., Holck
Average review score:

Good survey of eastern thought on death...and on living
This is a good survey of what the various major eastern religions and philosophies say about death. The insights on death and possible meanings to life can help each of us to come to terms with our own mortality.

The main religions and philosophies covered are Hinduism and Buddhism, with a lesser emphasis on the the philosophies of China and Japan.

I found this book to be thought provoking. The chapter on modern Hindu thought was especially well written and led me to the challenging and rewarding works of the modern Indian thinkers: Tagore, Radhakrishnan, and Aurobindo.

I give it 5 stars for its relevance to all and its breadth of coverage.

Denali: Deception, Defeat, & Triumph: To the Top of the Continent/Conquest of Mount McKinley/the Ascent of Denali
Published in Hardcover by Mountaineers Books (September, 2001)
Authors: Art Davidson, Belmore Browne, Hudson Stuck, and Frederick Albert Cook
Average review score:

Bravo!!! This is TOP QUALITY PUBLISHING!
Anyone would be greatly impressed at this collection of three early Denali (preferred name of Mt. McKinley) climbing stories. This is not one of those cheap "facsimile" books that are so common in public domain works. This is truly re-typeset to perfection! Photos have been reproduced with crisp contrast at full size to compliment the overall fine layout. Pages are soft; they lay open effortlessly to allow effortless reading.

A remarkable value to find these days. This is the combination of three works that would be prohibitively expensive to own as original editions, yet cost less than one of these, that I am aware of, that is in reprint. The experience is one of handling the original editions because there is so little of the domineering "New introductions" some egomaniacs burden this genre with.

The value of all three in a single volume has a powerful effect on the childish Cookie (Fred Cook) version that both offended and inspired Belmore Browne. He had a passion for exposing Cook and trying to climb Mt. McKinley himself. Recently Bradford Washburn lived up to his objective of "nailing Cook's coffin shut" (See: The Dishonorable Dr. Cook) with his devastating photos of exactly where the fakes occurred - many miles from and miles below the Denali summit. Now look here at Stuck's primitive, but authentically powerful pictures and Cookie becomes even more of a joke. All Fred Cook had going for him was compulsive lying coupled with sickening "poetic descriptions" that lulled weak minds. Not so Stuck! His group can be likened to early, primitive "Sir Edmund Hillary" style mountain climbers. Theirs is a thoroughly satisfying expedition that delivered the real photos, data, and supporting descriptions.

This is a brilliant trio of Denali classics that makes one appreciate Washburn's extraordinary efforts to nail that coffin shut by providing a context to understand why Belmore Browne was so offended with the Fred fraud. Denali is a magnificent natural wonder; Cook's self-serving exploitation of Mt. McKinley was like a dog taking a poop on a rare Persian carpet. Thankfully there were men of character, men with the determination of Browne and Stuck, who sought the reward of reaching that summit in the clouds.

Hats off to everyone who worked on producing this excellent publishing effort. While Washburn nailed the coffin, this book makes you want to grab your own hammer & nails to whack in a few more for good measure. Fun reading, excellent browsing, this is the ultimate reference companion on Denali. Bravo!!! Bravo!!!

Depardieu
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (February, 1995)
Authors: Paul Chutkow and Frederick Davidson
Average review score:

Depardieu-An Amazing Man!
When you look at a picture of Gerard Depardieu or see one of his earlier films, his appearance & mannerisms are generally sloppy and well, not very attractive. However, as you read through Paul Chutow's book, DEPARDIEU, you quickly learn there's a whole lot more to this famous French actor than just his nose. The reader will follow his rebellion against everything that surrounded him as a child, poverty, fear, ignorance and how Depardieu began a life-long quest for intelligence, accomplishment and significance. You will read how Mozart gave Mr. Depardieu his voice and how acting gave him his soul. The reader will soon not recognize the "big oaf" of the past, but begin to see the metamorphisis of a boy to a complex, intelligent, talented and perhaps the greatest unrecognized actor of our time. You will be invited into the depths of the creative process and into the openess of Mr. Depardieu's mind. You will find this a fascinating tale of a man that is diverse, yet simple and a wonderful story of someone I think everyone should know. Not only is he a an unbelievable and skilled actor, but he writes, directs, creates, sings, cooks, owns a winery and is just as mutli-faceted as a person could be. Yet, even though there is wonderful complexity, you will find yourself drawn into wanting to discover what is in this one man's heart. Paul Chutow's gives us a brief glimpse worth reading!
